The Event and the Cause

{#/pub/images/bikemsnyc.gif}Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating disease that affects hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. In the five Boroughs of New York and the counties surrounding the city, there are over 10,000 who have been diagnosed and are in need of a cure.

The National MS Society sponsors Bike MS: NYC, which is a day that New Yorkers plan to raise over three million dollars. Sponsors will donate through each rider, and many large corporations match the riders’ donations, which double and triple the original donations.

This year the cyclists will get a special treat; they are going through the Holland Tunnel that has been closed off from all other vehicles. The longer routes go around Manhattan on roads that are also closed to traffic. It is a special, once-a-year ride that only happens at Bike MS: NYC.

Bike MS: NYC is the largest fund-raising event for MS, and this year it is starting at Pier 92/94. Cyclists and observers will focus on raising millions in this one day biking event, while having a wonderful day of biking. The funds collected go directly to services for those with Multiple Sclerosis and their families in New York City, and Orange, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties. Funding for national and international research and new developments is also a priority destination for a great part of the donations.

General Information

The event takes places on October 21, 2012 rain or shine, and sign-up begins at 6:30am with the riders having breakfast before they leave at 7:20am. The 100 mile routes also receive lunch at the North Garnerville Elementary School rest stop or at the finish line. The start and finish location is Pier 92/94, and all participants must be over 12 years of age and able to ride at least 10 mph.

There is a $75 fee, and you must register online. All of the donations must be turned in by September 28. There are three routes to choose from, 30, 55 and 100 miles, and there is a minimum donation for each cyclist of $150, but there is no limit for the maximum donated! After you have turned in your donations, pick up your packet because if you do not have a packet on event day, you will not be permitted to participate.

Bike MS Finish Line Festival

The Finish Line Festival is the place to hang out as you cheer on the cyclists. There will be a variety of food and beverage stands and live entertainment. Friends and family can purchase lunch from 10 am to 6 pm, and have lunch with event participants whose lunch is included with their registration. There will also be massages for those aching muscles, event merchandise and a Fashion Show stating at 1 pm. What a Fantastic day of Fun and Purpose for all!
