Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week: Take Action!

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 24. Though faced with the fact that I had an incurable and progressive disease, I was determined to make the most of my life by helping others afflicted with M.S. I wrote “MS-Living Symptom Free,” to share my personal experience of living with the disease, and offer insights into ways other patients may be able to improve their quality of life.

I first became involved with MS fundraising events that encourage research and patient support. M.S. awareness week takes place from March 11-17. During this time, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and communities across the country strive to bring attention to MS by sponsoring various events.

Walk MS

From March through September, hundreds of cities large and small across the country host the MS Walk event. Volunteers of all ages register and obtain sponsors in hopes of raising more funds for the approximately 2.1 million citizens afflicted with multiple sclerosis. Families, friends, corporations or individuals commonly participate in walks. Depending on specific locations, the walk may extend a few miles or last three days and encompass up to 50 miles. The MS Walk originated in 1988 and participants to date successfully raised over $770 million. All funds acquired go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society who continues to finance research and support programs for families afflicted by MS. This year Daryl has been named MS Walk Ambassador, and hopes that the turnout will be even greater than last year.

Bike MS

Similar to the MS Walks, Bike MS participants acquire sponsorship and embark on a journey designed to raise funds to combat the disease. From April through October, over 100 cities nationwide hold the event annually. Rides might span as little as three miles or extend for a period of five days and a 250-mile adventure. Whether a weekend warrior or an accomplished athlete and regardless of age, all are welcome to join the effort. Short rides particularly provide the perfect opportunity for entire families to spend quality time together while raising money for the fight against MS Events bring caring people together for a common cause and reward volunteers with a sense of accomplishment and the satisfaction of helping make someone’s life a little better.

How you Can Spread Awareness

Getting involved is simple and can be done in your own unique way. Volunteer at an upcoming event near you, or start a team for one of the two events listed above. The bond of MS patients remains stronger than ever, and encourages new supporters to join us in the fight to find a cure. Each individual who signs up for an upcoming event, builds their own team, or donates makes a difference. How will you take action for MS week or month?
