Tips to Keep Cool with Multiple Sclerosis

Summer heat can sometimes mean increased symptom outbreaks for those suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In order to be comfortable this summer, it is important to stay cool and avoid extreme changes in body temperature. The outdoor temperature affects your body, but increased physical activity and long hours spent outdoors can also affect your core temperature. Use these tips to keep cool with Multiple Sclerosis and still get the most out of your summer vacation.

Eat cold foods
Your favorite summertime treats, like popsicles, can simultaneously satisfy your sweet tooth while cooling you down. Cold water and icy drinks will also keep you cool, but don’t use these beverages and sweets as meal substitutes. Cold cut sandwiches are a great source of protein, and you can keep a healthy diet by eating fresh fruits and veggies to stay cool and hydrated.

Dress for the outdoors
The summer sun is a great source of vitamin D, which is essential if you’re suffering from MS. Be sure to go outside and enjoy the weather during the early morning or around dusk. These are the coolest times of day so you can avoid overheating and stay comfortable. Dress appropriately, in hats and light-weight clothing, to maintain a healthy body temperature, and if you must go out during the peak afternoon hours, wear cooling garments. Cooling vests and hats are a great investment if you enjoy being outdoors.

Save on air conditioning
On particularly hot summer days, staying indoors and enjoying the air conditioning is the best way to stay cool. Save on your electricity bill by using your AC unit as a tax deduction. If you need increased AC in order to combat the disease and avoid symptoms, your doctor can write a prescription for heat-intolerance and help you save money.

Enjoy indoor activities
Heading to the mall or the movie theater during the summer are ideal ways to have fun and stay cool. Even if you have a busy schedule and errands to run, an indoor mall can be a one-stop-shop for all the items on your list. If you can drive, consider getting the parking pass that allows you to park close to the entrance. That way you can avoid the risk of overheating while walking across hot parking lots.

Stay comfortable while you work.
If you do have to work during the summer season, ask your employer to make special accommodations on particularly hot days. Adjust the AC as needed and explain why it is necessary for you to wear cooling vests and hats. Keep a fan at your desk to keep air circulating. Working from home, especially if you have a precise AC setting, can help you avoid any unnecessary discomfort while you work.

Staying cool and comfortable while you perform your daily tasks is the best way to enjoy the summer. Different symptoms can emerge from changes in temperature, so it is important to keep track of the ones that make you most uncomfortable. Some symptoms disappear after a few minutes, while others may last for hours. Make note of what prompts outbreaks and stay cool with your MS.
