Food For Your Thoughts: 5 Foods that Improve Memory

If you suffer from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), memory loss may be one of your relapsing symptoms. Fostering memory and sustaining memory retention is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If your MS affects your cerebral cortex where memories are stored, you may have a difficult time remembering new information, such as phone numbers of friends or dates and times of appointments. Brain skill activities, like crossword puzzles, can help boost your memory, but certain meals and snack foods can also increase your memory retention. The following five foods can improve memory in Multiple Sclerosis patients and can easily be implemented into any diet.

1. Avocado
This fruit helps contribute to healthy blood flow. Increased blood flow to the brain keeps neurons active and improves cognitive functioning. Avocados are also rich in Vitamin E, an antioxidant that can help slow down the progression of memory loss. Ongoing studies link Vitamin E to slowing down memory loss in both Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis. But because this fruit is more on the fatty side, only a 1 oz serving is needed.

2. Eggs
Eggs are stock full of vitamins that help improve and maintain memory performance. Vitamins B, B12, and A are all key to strengthening memory. Vitamin B12 also helps fight off depression and fatigue. While eggs are full of these valuable vitamins, be aware that some digestive tracts do not process them very well. Make sure to discuss any diet changes with your doctor before you start eating different foods.

3. Whole Grains
Brown rice, wheat breads, oats, and granola also contain valuable B Vitamins that help prevent memory loss. These whole grains are also key to maintaining concentration. Many MS patients report difficulties in concentrating on one task for a long period of time, which also leads to forgetting any particular details regarding the task at hand. By adding whole grains to your diet, you can help keep up your concentration and remember the details of your daily tasks without difficulty.

4. Fish
Fish are a popular addition to many diets because of their plentiful supply of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are particularly beneficial to brain development and performance, including memory and other cognitive functions. Fish are popularly recommended for MS as they can relieve symptom outbreaks and prevent relapses in some patients. Consider adding salmon, mackerel, and herring to your dinner plate in order to combat memory loss.

5. Dark Chocolate
Don’t forget dessert! Dark chocolate is proven to release endorphins in the brain that help elevate mood and concentration. By eating healthy amounts of chocolate, you can improve your focus and remain attentive throughout the day. Heightened focus and concentration helps keep your memory sharp and active, which can prevent you from forgetting the important details regarding your daily activities.

While each of these foods are helpful when it comes to maintaining memory and cognitive functioning, it is important to check with your doctor before making any changes to your existing diet. Knowing which foods affect your MS and knowing what your body needs to properly overcome the disease are important factors to consider when adding new and different foods to your diet. Out of these 5 foods for your thoughts, many also help maintain a healthy control over your MS symptoms. By eating lots of green veggies and omega-3s, like those found in fish, you can implement foods that improve your memory and reduce your symptom outbreaks.
