You may be tired of hearing your doctor tell you to eat healthier, but if you’ve been diagnosed with MS, it may be just what you need to do. What you eat dramatically impacts your MS symptoms, particularly the inflammation in your body. If you are eating healthy foods, you will experience fewer symptoms than if you are binging on fast food.
How important is diet when diagnosed with MS? What you eat impacts the following symptoms.
Fatigue
MS fatigue can be all-encompassing, interfering with work and your personal life. Your MS fatigue is made worse when you eat foods that increase inflammation. We’ve covered some healthy foods that help combat MS fatigue, but the most important thing is to eat a healthy breakfast as soon as you wake up. You should also be sure to stay hydrated as dehydration increases fatigue.
Brain Fog
Brain fog is one of the most frustrating symptoms of MS because it impacts every moment of your day and can significantly impact your relationships and career opportunities. Thankfully, eating healthy can dramatically improve your brain fog symptoms. If you have a hard time getting healthy foods in, at least consider drinking some anti-inflammatory juices to improve memory. And while you’re at it, check out these tips for dealing with MS memory problems.
Pain
Inflammation causes tons of symptoms in the body, but the one you are probably most familiar with is pain. It is important to eat the right foods (fruits, veggies, healthy fats, etc.), but it is equally important to avoid the wrong foods. Changing your diet may be a gradual process, but as you undertake it, you will feel healthier and more capable of living your life with MS.
So how important is diet when diagnosed with MS? I’d argue that it’s one of the most important things. I am a firm believer that changing your lifestyle is the best way to improve your MS symptoms, and that starts with your diet.
